Healthcare Professional Courses
(for those who work in a medical setting)
The American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages. Other skills include ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of a foreign-body airway obstruction. The CPR classes are intended for participants who provide healthcare to patients in a wide variety of settings.
Prerequisite: none. This course is right for you if you are a first time student taking this course for the first time or your certification has expired.
Course Description: This American Heart Association BLS (sometimes referred to as BCLS) for Healthcare Providers CPR/AED Initial/Renewal Course is designed for healthcare providers or aspiring healthcare providers who care for patients in a wide variety of settings, both in and out of hospital. The course includes the following:
- Initial patient assessment
- Rescue breathing with a face-shield, pocket face mask, and bag valve device
- One and two rescuer CPR for the adult, child, and infant with and without an advanced airway
- Use of supplemental oxygen
- Use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) on adults and children
- Relief of choking with a blocked airway for responsive and unresponsive victims of all ages
- Special situations for healthcare providers

The American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Online Renewal course is designed specifically for experienced healthcare providers who have prior CPR training and need recertification. The online course provides the opportunity to refresh skills and recertify without having to take the full content course in a traditional classroom. A brief Skills Test* in a classroom must also completed to receive a new completion card. Prerequisite: Current BLS for Healthcare Providers course completion card. *See BLS for Healthcare Providers Skills Test below.
The American Heart Association BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers Online Renewal Course provides a review for healthcare professionals who have prior CPR training. This program recognizes that healthcare professionals have knowledge and skills acquired from prior CPR training and years of patient care.
The course provides the opportunity to refresh skills and recertify without having to take the full content course in a traditional classroom.
Once you complete the online course, contact our American Heart Association Training Site to register for a skills test within 60 days. After you have completed both sections of the course, we will issue an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course completion card.

The Skills Evaluation for the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers course involves hands-on scenarios in a classroom. Successful completion enables you to receive a new course completion card. Prerequisite: Completion of the American Heart Association HeartCode BLS online program. This course is right for you if you want to obtain a certification card partly online and partly in a classroom.
CPR Class Course Description: The American Heart Association Skills Evaluation is designed specifically for healthcare providers who have completed the HeartCode BLS online class.

The BLS for Healthcare Providers Online Renewal Course, developed by CardioConcepts, Inc., is fully accredited by the American Heart Association. Kansas City First Aid is an Authorized Training Site of the American Heart Association.
The American Heart Association ACLS Providers Course is designed for Healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. Prerequisite: Successful completion of BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR Course.
The American Heart Association's Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support course is totally redesigned for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of hospital. Through the ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation.
ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as team leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care; recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest; identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

Work Place Courses
(for those who work in a non-medical setting)
The Heartsaver AED Course teaches the basic techniques of adult and child CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). The course also teaches how to recognize the signs of heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, and foreign-body airway obstruction. Infant CPR may be taught if students live or work in a setting where infants are present. This course provides certification to use a public access AED and satisfies the requirements for anyone who needs certification or recertification as part of an early access defibrillation program. The couse is modular, meaning there are two course options depending upon which modules you chose: Adult/Child or Adult/Child/Infant.
Course Description: This American Heart Association Heartsaver AED course was the first in the nation to combine hands-on AED instruction with adult CPR training. The course teaches the basic techniques of adult and child CPR and use of an AED.
Students also learn to use barrier devices in CPR and giving first aid for choking in the responsive victim. The course teaches how to recognize the signs of 3 major emergencies: heart attack, stroke, and choking.
Intended Audience: All lay responders with a duty to respond, such as employees in the workplace; firefighters; police; airline personnel; security guards; teachers; massage therapists; personal trainers; lifeguards: childcare providers; family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death; and other lay rescuers who may need to respond to a cardiac emergency and learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

It is a modular course that includes essential information and training in the first-aid skills recommended by OSHA and provides the skills to effectively assess and maintain life from the critical minutes immediately following an emergency, until the arrival of emergency medical services personnel.
Its highly effective video based practice while watching instruction format enables students to experience case-based scenarios in a realistic setting. Instructors introduce a topic, then show a video segment; students practice the skill, one at a time, while watching the video. The Instructor also presents cases for discussion.
Intended Audience: Persons assigned to respond to emergencies in the workplace or community as well as those who want to learn first aid, CPR and AED skills. Some rescuers are required to take this course as part of their employer’s efforts to comply with OSHA regulations, e.g., corporate employees, security guards, airline personnel, teachers, lifeguards, personal trainers, aerobic instructors, massage therapists, scout leaders, and other individuals who want or need first aid training.
